I am a writer, editor, and teacher living in the Inland Northwest. I am the author of out takes/ glove box (New American Press, 2023); Rust Fish (Lost Horse Press, 2011); Yesterday, the Bees, (Floating Bridge Press, 2015); and the collaboration (with visual artist Carrie DeBacker) Alchemy for Cells & Other Beasts (Entre Rios Books, 2017); as well as the textbook, Advanced Poetry: A Writer's Guide and Anthology (Bloomsbury, 2024) and the anthology, Evergreen: Grim Tales & Verses from the Gloomy Northwest (Scablands, 2021). My prose appears widely, and my memoir, Raised by Ferns, will be out in 2026 from Porphyry Press.
My fall events calendar is shaping up to include readings in Spokane, Portland, Ellensburg, Coeur d’ Alene, and on Zoom; plus craft classes and talks on Zoom and in person via Write Wilmington and CWU! Come hang out with me and all these beautiful humans with whom I have the pleasure of sharing spaces and stages.
And stay tuned for a Winter and Spring Events calendar for 2027– including (free!) generative drop-in workshops via the Spokane public library and Western Colorado University, plus readings in Moscow (University of Idaho) and Chicago (AWP Writers Conference). And if you’re wishing I were coming to your town, let’s make it happen!
(It features moose, cats, my bicycle when I was 10-15, recommendations for holiday gifts — spoiler, they are book titles!, news and links to published works, and a writing prompt. Please read and subscribe over at Substack. )
Do you want to take a workshop with me, called “Telling Secrets” or “Crossover Artists”? If you do, come to Port Townsend this week, and we’ll write letters and compose CNF lists of aboutnesses together. You can also take workshops with lots of other PNW & national writers. . . and attend readings, and wander the cliffs above the sea.
This book combines Carrie DeBacker’s visual art with my poems. Out in October from Entre Rios Books. We’d be pretty tickled to have you pre-order at the link above.
I do–but mine is now palpitating wildly because The Rumpus wanted to share my little heartbreak poem-letter to America with everyone. #dreamjournal #NationalPoetryMonth
Also this past month, poems out in Lilac City Fairy Tales, Vol 3: Weird Sisters (Thanks Sharma Shields). Very happy to have work in this strange and vibrant collection alongside authors like Claire McQuerry, Ellen Welcker, & Laura Read.
